The radiator in your BMW car or SAV plays a very important part. It keeps the engine from overheating, allowing it to operate at ideal temperatures. It does that by circulating a mixture of coolant and water through the engine. That mix collects any heat that's been building up.

The fluid moves from the radiator to your engine block through inlet hoses. The fluid gathers the engine's heat, and then returns to the radiator through outlet hoses. Once it's returned to the radiator, the heat is dispersed harmlessly into the air through the radiator's surface. The fluid mix, cooled again, is then free to return to the engine to repeat the process.

How to Spot a Faulty Radiator

Even the best radiator can go bad over time, though. Signs of trouble include:

  • You smell the sweet, syrupy odor of coolant
  • You hear odd noises coming from your engine
  • Your air conditioning or heating doesn't seem to work right
  • Your temperature gauge reads unusually high
